The Benefits of our Super Ingredients

ACAI BERRY

Acai Berry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) is a tropical purple colored fruit with lots of Anti-oxidant nutrients such as anthocyanin and polyphenols. It has been reported that it has the below properties which promotes better Oral Health. Some of these benefits are below:

A. Anti-Oxidant

The oral cavity is the only place in the human body that is constantly exposed to many external factors such as the food we consume, the air we breath, man-made and natural pollutants such microorganism (bacteria, viruses, and fungi), as well as xenobiotics (cigarette smoke, alcohol, dental materials, and medication).

It has been proven that some of these have substantial oxidizing potential and have the ability to generate “Free radical”. Free radical can damage the cellular components in our bodies. Constant exposure will lead to oxidative stress which will then play a major role in the pathogenesis leading to a dysfunction of the salivary gland, xerostomia, periodontitis, precancerous conditions and cancer of the oral cavity.

Anti-oxidant are molecules that fight these harmful free radicals. Research has indicated that Acai Berries have an incredibly high amount of Anti-oxidants in its composition. (In the case of Acai Berry in 10 grams you can get Anti-oxidant equal to a 188 tomatoes)

B. Anti-Inflammation

Acai Berry is known to have abundant anthocyanin, which has many biological activities, including Anti-inflammatory, Anti-oxidant, Anti-hypertensive, and Anti-cytotoxic/cytoprotective activities

C. Promote Wound Healing

Recent studies have showed that Acai Berry also has oral wound healing effect. This might be associated with its high Anti-Oxidant activity.

(Wound is an abnormal status of structure or function of the human body, and it occurs due to external damage. Many factors can affect the wound healing process which is a complicated phenomenon with a series of processes. Because the oral mucosa is always exposed to saliva and oral bacteria, delayed wound healing or scar formation with pain may occur. Many factors such as chewing and swallowing food, and pronunciation can affect wound healing of oral mucosa.)

GREEN TEA

Green tea (Camellia Sinensi), has been a leading beverage in the Far East for thousands of years. There is an increasing interest on the health benefits of green tea in the field of oral health. Some of these benefits are below:

A. Anti-Oxidant

Antioxidants reduce inflammation in the body. The bacteria in the gum can lead to periodontal disease.Periodontal disease, as it progresses is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects gum and bone which surrounds the tooth cause inflammation in the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. Anti-oxidant will reduce this inflammation, allowing the body to preserve the bone that would other wise be lost and would result in loose and missing teeth. Gum disease has also been linked to heart disease and diabetes.

B. Anti-Bacterial

The polyphenols in green tea were shown to cause an Anti-microbial effect against all the mouth germs that were tested, reducing the ability of the bacteria to grow in enough quantity to cause cavities, bleeding on gum and gum disease.

C. Anti-Cavity

The EGCG extract from the green tea causes a reduction in acid production and maintains a PH level that prevent dental cavities. Green tea also reduces the salivary levels of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus.(Streptococcus mutans is a significant contributor to tooth decay)

D. Anti-Malodour

Recent study has also reported that using green tea mouthwash significantly reduces the volatile sulfur components level in patients with gingivitis. Another study has demonstrated that green tea extract had the ability to remove odorant sulfur.

E. Promote Wound Healing

Green tea is also recognized for their roles in host defense, human gingival cells, and inflammatory response. That could be applied in the mouth to aphthous ulcers (canker sores), bleeding on gum, gum disease and periodontal disease.

F. Anti-Inflammatory Activity

G. Antiviral and Fungal Properties

Ola Toothpaste is also SLS and SLES Free

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES), are chemicals agent that is used for everyday cleaning. It is the most common detergent in the beauty industry. It essentially helps liquid substances ‘foam’. Today, we find it in many everyday cleaning products from floor cleaners to shampoos and toothpastes. SLES is a milder version of SLS. These help to create the foam that loosens debris in our teeth and makes cleaning easier when you brush. Another effect of SLS is the distortion in taste we experience after brushing. While this can upset the taste of your morning coffee or orange juice, the majority of us don’t experience any side effects from having SLS in our toothpaste.

Indications have shown that Oral health care products that contain SLS are likely to cause cracking at the
corners of the mouth, oral mucosa peeling and aphthous ulcers (canker sores). SLS toothpaste can also increase
the frequency of repeated mouth ulcers. Those who suffer with a dry mouth may also benefit from SLS-free
toothpaste. It can also be too harsh for pregnant women and even young children whose mouths are more
sensitive.

Ola Toothpaste is also Paraben Free

Parabens are preservatives widely used in the food and cosmetic industries. They inhibit the growth of microbes in products and are common in oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwashes. As these oralcare products are moist, they are at risk of microbial contamination. Therefore, parabens are commonly used to keep these products free from bacteria and fungi contamination.

There are however adverse effects with use of parabens:
• Parabens have a disruptive effect on the endocrine system and cause sexual prematurity in children.
• Parabens affect the male reproductive system by lowering testosterone levels and sperm counts.
• Parabens are also known to have a carcinogenic effect. In females, parabens from cosmetics can penetrate the skin and act as a weak female hormone estrogen in the body. These parabens then binds to the estrogen receptors (female hormones) and cause breast cells to multiply, increasing the risk of breast cancer.
• Paraben-containing toothpaste can cause stomatitis (inflammation in the mouth) and cheilitis (inflammation of lips) in some. While the prevalence of allergic stomatitis and cheilitis due to paraben in toothpaste is rare, parabens serve as potential allergens in toothpaste.
